Tips to ensure cloud computing works for you
Today everything surrounding us is connected in some form to the digital world. Hence, In the race to go digital, most businesses today are considering the Internet of Things & cloud projects. However, there are still some key questions about impact, security, and value that are obstacles to adoption.
To begin with, let’s understand what cloud computing is. Cloud computing is a type of computing that works on computing resources that are shared to handle various applications. Simply, put it is storing important data and information in the cloud as opposed to the normal hard drives. The need for this was due to a large amount of data involved in various processes.
These need to be considered a lot before the actual implementation of the same. We are glad to share some tips for you:
1. Is your data storage in the cloud or on an IoT device? This depends on a lot of things, but I have two thumb rules: First when in doubt leave it in the cloud. IoT devices are efficient and programmed to collect data and transmit it to the cloud, but they ideally don’t have any internal resources for data collection in long-term and storage. Thus, the rise of edge computing, to provide a location for processing and storage that is closer to the IoT device, outside of the cloud. Second, security becomes core to data placement. Some data is personally identifiable and needs to be handled in specific ways. Indeed, in some countries, it’s not allowed to be transmitted to a public cloud. For this, you take data placement on a case-by-case basis, and perhaps even reconsider the use of cloud in specific situations.
2. Is data encryption done for all data when dealing with IoT and the cloud? Encryption does carry processing and I/O load. A cloud provider that has access to various processing resources won’t be hindered by this, but small IoT devices are another story. If they are asked to encrypt everything gathered by the sensors and move it to the cloud, that’s going to cause an impact on performance for most smaller devices with smaller commodity processors. I don’t recommend that you encrypt everything. If you’re moving healthcare data from an IoT device to the cloud, I would take the performance hit and encrypt. But innocuous data from a machine on a factory floor isn’t worth it again.
3. Amount of data capturing per minute? This really depends on the use case. If you’re gathering data within an airplane, that’s a lot of data fast given that the more you gather, process, and respond to, the safer the plane can fly. But keep in mind that you’re putting more stress on the network, sensors, and the device itself. Trade-offs again. Learning about IoT and cloud is still under process and we are bound to make mistakes over the learning process. Here, every mistake is a lesson learned, but the challenge is to control its impact on surroundings.
